OF MIRROR EXCHANGES

In their mirrors,
They asked each other
About their dreams.

I
Dreaming
She told of a recurring dream,
Of an empty city of white marble,
And of walking down the streets,
Her feet wet from the streaming water.

And of another dream,
Of a city on fire,
And of her feet burning
As she ran.

He, too,
Had dreamed of marble and burning cities,
And though he had never glimpsed her there,
Had heard her voice
As she had his.

II
Mapping
In their mirrors,
They merged the two cities
Into a single map,
Composed of myriad white and red lines.

III
Remembering
Another time,
In their mirrors,
They asked each other
About their earlier lives,

Often writing down
In the third person
Their memories.
